Good afternoon on this glorious and bright snow day! I love how every time is snows here in the city, it reminds me of my younger days. The days of watching old phenomenal Christmas classics, like The Christmas Story or Christmas Vacation, while sipping hot cocoa with my sisters. Remembering how as a yearly tradition, my entire family would make a day trip dedicated to walking around mid-town, seeing the tree (a must!), doing some shopping, and just enjoying the beauty that snow revealed throughout. Now, l let me fast forward then to my old college days at Oneonta!! Unlike here, snow barely impacted life there. We still went to classes with our faces numb, we still went out and partied in little skirts, and in the end, it became our companion. The snow sometimes ended in the Spring which seems ridiculous to city-dwellers, but was normalcy to the locals. To some, going to college upstate and having to survive the treacherous snow and lake effect winds would force him/her to search elsewhere, but not me. I actually really enjoy the snow--so kill me~ Ever since moving to Brooklyn a few years ago, it's become such an annoyance to hear everyone complain about the snow. Sure, it definitely is a hindrance, but DUH you live in NEW YORK! It shouldn't be a surprise that we may get a few snow storms during our winters. Snow to me brings an array of memories, but best of all, being able to see all of the glistening rooftops from my balcony is priceless. It sometimes takes me back to imagining life in Prospect Heights in the 1920's, where there were all tenement houses. Men wearing top hats and suits, and women looking stunning with their stockings, heals and feminine hats. Today, seeing all of the short buildings with snow on top spread like icing is just that perfect urban vision of the NYC winters. It's just not the same at looking at house rooftops--it gives it more of a historical feel. Snow isn't a natural "disaster" that everyone fears, it's a blessing to me. It has always had some impact on my life, and I hope it will continue to do so~
